While musing to myself a few months ago on the state of the solid-state markets (a popular pastime for many) I found myself wondering why GE, a behemoth in the light bulb and fluorescent tube market, was not one of the big LED players.
Then, lo and behold, fast-forward a couple of months and during a conversation with a member of the GE team I find out its teaming up with one of the biggest LED manufacturers in the world - Nichia.
Then GE delivers another twist - the company has joined forces with Konica Minolta, and is now stating the world will have OLED lighting to rival incandescent bulbs within three years.
Wow, that's fast.
Quizzically, the two were previously heading in opposite directions - GE working with flexible substrates, and KM working on the efficiency of the devices. But hopefully they will now fuse together, well, they'll have to in order to achieve GE's prediction!
My only concern is whether the companies controlling the incandescent and fluorescent bulb market will REALLY push a technology that threatens their core business.
But with energy efficient lighting the buzzword in the industry, moving to solid state could be a very good idea.
